What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy?
Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a focused, problem-solving counseling technique that has been shown in over 375 outcome studies to be highly effective for the treatment of many mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, panic, anger, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder (in conjunction with medication), social phobia, personality disorders, and marital distress. Our counselors also work with medical conditions such as chronic pain, hypertension, headaches and fibromyalgia.
In counseling sessions, we start with the idea that mood and behavior are linked to perceptions and beliefs about events and situations. When people are in distress, they often do not think clearly and their perceptions are distorted. First, we focus on identifying and altering the beliefs and perceptions which can cause the problematic mood. Next, we teach ways to change that thinking. We also teach strategies to change behaviors that cause or maintain problems. Counseling emphasizes evaluation, problem solving and targeted change.
In general, CBT is more short term than traditional talk therapies because CBT is goal oriented and focused. In CBT the counselor and client collaborate about the specific goals and direction of therapy. Progress is closely monitored, and if needed, a change in focus and structure can be made quickly. Researchers have developed specific treatment protocols to match specific problems as well as workbooks and other educational materials. In addition to our expert counselors, clients have access to other materials they can use at home to practice what has been discussed with their counselor.
